My family and I make it a point of trying not to use plastic
zipper bags but it is sometimes unavoidable. We just make a point of reusing
them... multiple times.
We wash them in hot soapy water with a sponge just like if
they were any other plastic container.
and then they
get placed in the dish drying rack with the zipper end down and the inner part
of the bag is open to allow it to finish air drying thoroughly.
There are drying racks that you can make yourself or purchase, but if you quickly give them the once over with a dish towel, then let them air dry, you won't have them hanging around your kitchen for very long. Once the bags have completely finished air drying (usually 5-10 minutes) we fold them in half and put
them in the drawer until we need them again. We reuse them by putting nearly anything
back into them. I can’t exactly say how
many times we reuse a bag, but we have crackers, puzzle pieces, crayons and
camping goods in zipper bags that have been used to hold various food items or
whatnot a minimum of 5 times. Not only
does this reduce the amount of bags that inevitably end up in the landfill, but
we also end up purchasing them far less frequently.
Give it a shot and see how easy it is to wash and reuse
them!
